According to the statistics revealed in the research conducted by transport authorities, faulty brakes and dodgy tires were the top reasons for the biggest crashes for consecutive six years. As per the data based on the base year 2013 to 2018, the number of crashes caused by malfunctioning of brakes was 3894 on roads of Britain which not only caused injuries but fatalities too.
As per the analysis of Pagid, an OE-approved braking brand of TMD Friction: the highest number of fatalities due to defective brakes occurred in 2018 were 15 deaths – representing a 67% year-on-year increase compared to 2017 whereas since 2013 there have been 64 fatalities due to defective brakes.
There could be multiple factors why brakes are consecutively emerging as the topmost vehicle defect contributing in road accidents but drivers also need to be aware that worn brakes pose a serious threat and can lead to fatalities. It is advisable to get the brakes checked in-between scheduled intervals especially if the warning signs such as squealing sound or abnormal vibration is heard when the brake is applied.
Other factors that contributed to road accidents are road environment, vehicle defects, injudicious action, driver/rider error or reaction, impairment or distraction, behavior or inexperience, vision affected by external factors, pedestrian-only factors (casualty or uninjured); and special codes.
